Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 10:34-39)
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
Jesus challenges us with his words—to see the world, to see who he is, and to understand his message—to transform our consciousness. The old relationships—the way they function and the way they are understood—are changed. Jesus places love of him—and we can read this as love of God and love of truth—above family relationships. This is not a selfish request because he does not need our love. It is a different kind of request. When our relationships lead us toward worldly concerns they get in the way of seeking things of heavenly value. We are best led by our purpose and by our commitment to what is good, to what is true, and we are best led by the kind of love that does not place limits on us or other people. We are called into a different kind of freedom. We are asked to love the same way that God loves us, where we are given the freedom to choose without restraints or obligations to bind us.
God of peace, we look for ways to bring about your will and intention in our lives and in the world. Help us avoid trying to do the wrong things with what we have learned from the example of Jesus. May the peace in our hearts be translated into peaceful actions and peaceful words that help enlighten humanity to your will and to the life we have been given through grace. Through our effort and our surrender, may we experience your peace. Amen.
From The Readings
2012-135 You must understand that sometimes your understanding can be so rapidly integrated into your life that you will actually move away from people and circumstances because of the direction of the energy around the relationship—just like other energy phenomena in your life that you respond to. There are energies that carry people away from you, even though there are times you may think you have been carried away from them. These things always happen according to your purpose or according to their purpose. If you were to push closer to them, it is always possible that their purpose would carry them away from you. It is good to be content sometimes that your life does not require karmic interaction with certain people or things. Let them be carried away. Or let them stay away if that is their choice.
