Christ in You
You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:3-5)
In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them. (John 14:19-21)
All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. (John 1:3-4)
Many people are not comfortable with the idea that God, or Christ, is present inside of them. They may find it easier to think of God as separate from humanity; separate in a way that allows us to accept our sin, accept our errors, and accept our lack of perfection. As sinful beings without the spark of divine within us, our failures are easier for us to accept. How can we do better if we don’t really have the ability to do better? However, if we do have that spark of the divine within us it means that somewhere inside of us we have the power to do better; we have the power to overcome selfish inclinations; we have the power to resist temptation.
Perhaps we can learn to see the presence of Christ in us as the potential to do better, to do more, to overcome whatever holds us back from fulfilling God’s will. If we see this potential in ourselves we can begin the process of growing and developing spiritually as human beings. By exercising our free will, in effect our spirituality grows and becomes a form of empowerment. Recognizing and accepting this power is having faith in God’s divine law that through God all things are possible. It is believing what Jesus said to the disciples, that they would do even greater things than he. Believing is also understanding that it is not we who do good, but God working through us. Our empowerment is not a matter of us having more personal strength, though that may develop. It is a matter of aligning ourselves with God’s law and God’s power.
In our moments of weakness God, it is difficult for us to trust your power. We vainly try to do everything ourselves, not realizing that all things that are good and true are accomplished through your power. Help us to set aside that part of ourselves that gets in your way. May we accept that we help best when we are instruments of your will and when we accept that your will be done in us and through us. You have provided us with a way of truth and life that calls us to recognize the gifts that we have been given. May we express the truths that have been written on our hearts and may we express the grace that has come to us through the work of Christ. Amen.
From The Readings
2012-105 Do not be overly concerned with where others may appear to be. You will be expressing God’s presence and it is up to them to respond. It’s not up to you to convince them. Just be solid in your understanding of yourself. In this way you can be joyful and happy, and take what comes to you and engage with it. In one way, you will see yourselves wanting to draw everything into you. People will come to you, respond to you, engage with you, and then re-engage. They will also leave. You will have more and more to do of a spiritual nature, though it might appear that you are doing less and less. This is because your own state of being, has realized God and realized the nature of the world. Just by virtue of these two realizations, you will be performing good at all times, and your energy will not only transform you, but transform everything around you. You will find that you will be able to give love in return for everything that you receive. You will recognize the God that is present in every other person even if they do not recognize it in themselves. You may consciously speak to the God that is in other people and God will respond. You will help bring out the best in other people.
