It is a generalization, meaning that it is not always true, but it is something that should always be considered: that a choice for less is a better choice for the soul if the choice for less means that there is less being given to the desire, the attachment, or the aggrandizement of the soul’s ego presence in the world. When there is too much in the way of material quantity, too much in the way of ego-centric attention, or strong attachment to the appearance of things, these cloud the ability of the human being to see into their true nature.
The ego can use the knowledge that the abundance of God is available to everyone at any time and place, and yet mislead the individual with regard to the balance, the values, and the understanding of the order that is the essence of the universe. When these things come into conflict, it is frustrating and anger can erupt. But understand that the eruptions and the anger also signals that the answer is close at hand; that the transformation is coming, because the anger will run into its own creation, its own fear, and it helps identify the obstacle to one’s inner peace.
There are so many ways that others, other individuals, other groups, those that speak for groups ask for commitment. They ask in personal ways through the spoken word, and through the traditions of giving. So these commitments are very difficult for a person who needs freedom in order to understand themselves, in order to understand how the mind works, in order to understand how the higher consciousness that is present function.
Too often, the ego would like to control the body, the mind, and ultimately the soul. For if the body and the mind and the soul are in alignment with the ego, then the ego can ask anything and the body, and the mind and the soul will obey. But understand that the ego’s desire is never satisfied. Though your physical stomach may feel full, the ego’s stomach is like a bottomless pit. The more that is shoved in and falls through the bottom, the more anxious the ego gets that it cannot fill its desire, and it shovels more and more into the being.
Human beings tend to see the ego as a psychological phenomena, but it is important to understand that the ego can use the physical body to control the being, just as the ego uses an addiction to help control the being. It is the psychological imprints or patterns, scripts, that help create the addictive behavior, and then the body becomes dependent on the drug or the food or the drink. But what of the people who are not addicted to drugs or food or drink, how can the ego assert itself?
