2016-046 Virtue comes from within the human being and is expressed outwardly. Just like many other forms of expression and behavior, the true meaning is what comes from the interior of the person. Virtue is not an external rule or commandment, and there can be no external definition of the purity of virtue, because virtue is always aligned with the interior condition of a person. So much of what the world sees as virtue comes from an understanding of externally applied rules, but those who are on a spiritual path that have reached the depth of understanding of themselves and others, know that this comes from within. It is confusing to those at an early stage of spiritual growth to consider that violence and killing can be an expression of virtue. But this is where the modern world has lost some of its connection to the virtuous act of killing or waging war. When there is so much distance and so much separation and so much fear and lack of knowledge between those in conflict, it is difficult to find virtue on the battlefield. It is only the enemies that know each other intimately that can fight and give all of themselves knowing that their opponent gives all of themselves, and there is the mutual respect, the mutual acknowledgment of the truth in the other person that allows the honor to exist between warriors. Understand that this is very rare. It is an ideal, just like there are ideals of many forms.
