Difficulty of the Spiritual Path

2014-84 It is so easy to fall in love with the idea that the advanced soul knows its way in the world, always knows what to do, always accomplishes or achieves what appears to be good or pleasurable in the world, and this is so far from the truth. This is why the difficulty of the spiritual path is so important. Once the consciousness of the soul becomes one with God, the initial feeling, the initial sensation, even the first thoughts are that the person is alone, that there is no one like you, that there's no one that likes you, or that there is no one that understands you. And in some ways there is some truth in this, but this is part of the feeling and the perception that is left over from the transition from one form of consciousness to the other; it’s like the soul has been emptied so that all goodness and truth can come in. This goodness and truth is not confined in a material sense in the location of the body or the location of the physical being. There needs to be time for the new consciousness to grow and expand into this new space in the being, and this is where the understanding of what is infinite and eternal becomes important, because there is at the same time a going in, an expansiveness that feels like going out. At the same time that there is the perception of looking down and having a very high perspective, there is also a sensation of looking up and seeing everything as if it is greater and more expansive than the small human being that sits on a little piece of earth in the universe. The physical relationships that one sees and the magnitude of the physical dimension mirrors the inner spiritual condition of the being, so that you can be sure that this parallel universe always exists, whether you are aware that this exists or not. But we are saying to you right now that the feeling of being alone, the feeling just beyond the transition point of beginning to merge with God, this is where that consciousness begins. This is where the expansion begins. This is where the larger perspective begins. And this is the place that feels very intimate, so much so that the Muslim mystics use the phrase "alone with the alone," because one that is in this state of consciousness is bearing witness to the rest of all creation, of all eternity.
