Bear Witness to the Truth

Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37)

For Contemplation

Here Jesus gives a clear expression of his purpose. We can find many levels of truth in his statement. He knows and understands who he is. By living according to his purpose, he believes that he also bears witness to the truth of God’s presence in the world. By expressing the truth, he exposes the false claims against him and exposes the limitations of other claims of truth. In just a few moments he shows Pilate and the others around him the opportunity that exists for them to bear witness to the truth by listening to his voice, but they do not have the ears to hear or the eyes to see.

In loving you God, may we also love truth in all of its forms and ways, and may we love all of the ways that your truth is expressed. Help us to see the truth that we must know about ourselves and help us to bear witness to truth wherever it is found in the world. Help us to recognize that our strength comes from truth and help us to trust that the truth we find will always contribute to our wholeness. May our acceptance of the truth in our lives be healing to us and to those around us. Amen.
